Dr. John Jefferson Smallwood was born at a time when racial prejudice in America was at its peak.  But he never stopped fighting for the freedom of his people.  He was known as an insightful, colored orator in New England and soon he became founder and president of an institution that would eventually educate over two thousand African American boys and girls during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
